P.E.I.’s fire marshal Dave Blacquiere said he’s ecstatic about a new product, called a Stove Guard

Consumer Reports tested the product and it “worked as advertised.” Blacquiere said he’s tried the device, too, and he’s impressed.

“We’ve preached the message that smoke detectors save lives and they do,” said Blacquiere.

“But these devices stop the problem before it starts.”

Older Home Situations
Some older homes are not wired to meet the current electrical codes and do not have a 4-Prong stove plug. This is the national standard in homes & apartments constructed after 1995.

Older homes with a 3-Prong stove outlet
The existing electrical outlet & the stove's electrical cord has to be updated to match Stove Guard.

A four-conductor outlet is available from home improvement centers (Lowe's & Home Depot) for under $10. Appliance stores that sell stoves will carry the 4 prong stove cord kit for about $20.

Use a licensed Electrician to install.

Do Not change or tamper with Stove Guard's electrical connections. This will violate Electrical Code Certifications.

Older Hard-wired homes without a stove outlet
A licensed Electrician must install Stove Guard.

Options:
Update the wiring to current electrical codes with a 4-Prong system.
OR
Order a COOKTOP model CT-208 and have the Electrician make the hard-wired connections, using the existing wiring.

Cooktops are Hard-wired
They do not use a Plug & Receptacle

The Electrician will make the connections in the Power Box between the cooktop and the house wiring, according to local electrical codes.

The control wire will also have to be routed up from the Power Box to the EMU (sensor/control) which is mounted on the wall or to the bottom of an upper cabinet.

Typical installation should take the Electrician about an hour of billable time.
